Garage Door Panel Replacement: what the visit covers

Trade guidance treats a garage door as a system: sections, hinges, rollers, tracks, cables, springs and opener all depend on one another, and an impact on one section rarely stops there.

Careful work on heavy doors.

Trade guidance treats a garage door as a system: sections, hinges, rollers, tracks, cables, springs and opener all depend on one another, and an impact on one section rarely stops there. That is why a section replacement includes checking what the damage did to everything connected to it. A bent hinge is replaced, a roller that jumped is checked for a flat spot, a track bracket that shifted is reset, and the spring balance is re-measured with the new section's weight in place. The section is the visible part of the repair; the alignment and balance work around it are what make the door run true again.

What the impact did to everything else

Trade-association guidance is clear that after a vehicle strike, a storm or a freeze-up the whole door is looked at, not just the dented part. The technician runs a hand along the hinges for cracks and pulled screws, spins each roller for flat spots and bent stems, sights down both tracks for kinks and checks the brackets that hold them to the jambs. Cables are inspected for fraying where they wrap the drums, spring anchors and the centre bearing plate are checked, and the opener arm and its bracket are examined for bending. Anything the impact disturbed goes on the list alongside the section.

Removing the damaged section

With the door secured and, where relevant, the springs unloaded, the hinges joining the damaged section to its neighbours are unbolted and the rollers slid out of the tracks. A section is wider than the opening between the tracks, so it comes out by tilting one end inward and walking it clear, occasionally after loosening a track bracket to gain a few millimetres. Two people handle a wide or insulated section because of its weight and its sharp edges. Once it is out, the technician checks the exposed edges of the sections above and below for damage that was hidden while the door was assembled.

Holding off rust on the lower edge

Salt and slush are what turn a healthy bottom section into a flaking one, so give the lower sections a rinse when the salt season ends and again after any heavy slush. Look along the bottom edge and around the seal retainer for chipped paint and touch it up with the colour from your record before bare steel has a chance to bloom. Keep the bottom seal in good condition so water sheds off the face rather than sitting on the lip. Inside, a glance at the back of the section during the monthly check catches moisture marks early.
